Which Wigan bin should I use?

Wigan separates paper and card from other mixed recycling. Match your collection calendar to the right bin; the council’s colour guide below explains the accepted materials.

Keep the lid closed, avoid extra bags and put the handles towards the road without blocking the pavement. Number the bin and bring it back inside your boundary after collection. The council’s public putting-out page says by 6.30am, no earlier than 6pm the previous evening, with bins back by midnight.

The council warns that batteries, vapes and items containing batteries must not go in kerbside bins. Use its disposal advice instead. If you cannot put bins out and have nobody who can help, check the assisted-collection guidance.

Blue bin or white sack
Paper and cardboard, including newspapers and clean card. Keep food, nappies and plastic bags out.
Brown bin
Accepted cans, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays. Check the full council list for accepted wrapping and cartons.
Green bin or caddy
Accepted garden and food waste. Keep food packaging, plastic bags, liquids, soil and rubble out; follow the council’s liner guidance.
Black bin
Non-recyclable household rubbish. Building materials, hazardous waste and liquids are not accepted.

Council information checked 8 October 2026.

Missed bin?

Check the missed-streets list before reporting. If your street is listed, leave the bin at its usual collection point instead of submitting another report. Otherwise, use the council’s reporting guidance after 8pm on collection day and within 48 hours. There is a discrepancy to check: the public guidance says bins must be out by 6.30am, while the linked reporting form currently says 5.45am. Read the live form’s eligibility rules before submitting; do not assume a late, contaminated or overloaded bin qualifies for a return. Shared bins have a separate reporting form linked from the guidance page.

Bank holidays and changed collections

Use your property’s current calendar and the council’s latest notices for holiday arrangements. This guide does not reproduce old Christmas dates or infer a new collection day. When collection changes affect Wigan, we cover them in our local news.
