Wigan Athletic fell to a 2-1 defeat away at Huddersfield Town in Sky Bet League One, with captain Jensen Weir acknowledging the side must take responsibility for their performance on the road.

Goals from Dutch players Ilias Bronkhorst and Derensili Sanches Fernandes either side of half-time put Huddersfield in control at the Accu Stadium. Christian Saydee's late effort was not enough to salvage the result for Gary Caldwell's Tics.

Weir: Team Must Compete Better

Speaking after the match, Weir said Wigan started well but lost control in the closing stages of the first half. "We started the game well on the front foot, how we wanted to start the game, and then the last 20 minutes of the first half were nowhere near good enough," he said.

"They get into the game, we concede a sloppy goal that's preventable, so yeah, frustrating first half."

Weir placed the onus on players rather than coaching staff to reverse the team's fortunes. "That's on us, that's not on the staff. That's on us as players to go out there and compete and win duels and all the basic stuff for the game."

The captain urged his teammates to maintain belief despite their current position in the league. "I think we have to keep fighting and keep the belief in the group. It's not ideal where we are; everyone knows that, and no one wants to be there. But it's only us as players who can go and change that."

Weir concluded: "It's now on us to go and produce performances, get goals, create chances, and stop the ball going in our net, so no one can do it for us; it's on us to go and really do that."
