Wigan Athletic U21s picked up three points with a 2-1 victory over Huddersfield Town at the Brick Community Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. Goals from Cole Simms and Joe Gilbertson secured the win, which extends Chris Brown's side to three matches unbeaten in the Professional Development League.
How the match unfolded
Latics made a positive start, with Cole Simms and Joe Gilbertson combining early on. The opening goal came in the 37th minute when Reece Greenhalgh spotted Simms on the last shoulder and slid him in behind the opposition defence. Simms made no mistake at the near post.
After the interval, Wigan continued their dominance. Seven minutes into the second half, Henry Miller delivered a wicked, swirling cross towards the back post. Gilbertson volleyed in from inside the six-yard box to extend the lead to 2-0.
Although Latics appeared comfortable, Huddersfield pulled one back in the 80th minute when a Max Murray long throw caused problems in the Wigan defence. James Knott attempted to clear but turned the ball into his own net past Tom Watson.
Coming into the match
Wigan arrived having won 6-4 against Colchester United earlier in the month and drawn 2-2 with Coventry City in their previous outing. Huddersfield came to the Brick Community Stadium with two victories from their opening three PDL games, including wins over Millwall and Queens Park Rangers.
