Wigan Athletic Women claimed a 3-1 victory at Frenchfield Park against Penrith AFC Ladies on Sunday to extend their unbeaten run in the 2026/27 campaign.
Goals from Izzy Worswick (15' and 86') and Danielle Young (64') sealed the win in the North West Women's Regional League. Penrith scored once, with an effort at 27' minutes.
First Half Balance
The opening 45 minutes proved evenly contested, with both sides finding the net to leave the score at 1-1 at the break. Worswick opened the scoring inside 15 minutes after Hannah Forster played Laura Heslip into space. Heslip's outside-of-the-boot pass found Worswick, who held her nerve to finish.
Worswick's goal marked Wigan Athletic Women's 300th competitive goal since the club's formation.
Penrith equalised just before the half-hour mark with a looping strike from outside the box. Goalkeeper Amelia Knowles made an exceptional save to keep the score level during the play, getting down low in a one-on-one and blocking the initial attempt.
Second-Half Dominance
The Tics came out with increased intensity after the break, applying sustained pressure. Young added the second goal at 64 minutes, and Worswick doubled her tally in the 86th minute to secure the points.
Manager Danielle Young made two changes from the previous week's FA Cup penalty shootout win over Chester FC Women, bringing in Worswick and Heslip. The team lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, with Knowles in goal, a back four of Kaitlin Millward, Libby McCoy, Abbie Moore and Becky Abbott, midfield trio of Scarlett Grindley, Hannah Forster and Sophie Whelan, and attack featuring Heslip, Amy Hughes and Worswick.
Attendance at Frenchfield Park was 30,725. The 176-mile round trip marked Wigan Athletic Women's first visit to the ground.
