Wigan Athletic will travel to Barnsley on Saturday for their first competitive fixture of the 2026/27 season in the Carabao Cup First Round.
Midfielder Jensen Weir said the squad is determined to make a strong start after a seven-week pre-season period. Wigan have brought in several new players alongside manager Gary Caldwell, who has introduced fresh ideas to the club.
Pre-season Preparation
Although pre-season results did not go the way Latics would have wanted, Weir believes the intensive training period has been valuable for the new-look squad. "Results in pre-season are not what we would have liked, but I think that's a good thing for us because we're a new group, so we want to address any problems now and get things in line," Weir said.
The midfielder highlighted the importance of building relationships between new teammates and understanding Caldwell's approach. "It's mainly about minutes in the legs but getting to understand new teammates and new ideas from the Gaffer," he said.
Weir Commits to Latics
Weir signed a new deal with Wigan this summer and said the manager's confidence was key to his decision. "I was buzzing to sign a new deal with the Club. It's a place that's close to my heart," he said.
The fixture against Barnsley on Saturday kicks off competitive action for Wigan in the 2026/27 campaign.
