Wigan Athletic finished their double-header weekend with a goalless draw at Southport's Haig Avenue on Friday evening. Head Coach Gary Caldwell fielded a youthful squad containing 12 Kingdom Academy graduates and three trialists in the National League North encounter.
Several attacking opportunities arose at both ends. Kai Payne came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half when his low shot was saved by Solomon Honor. Hindolo Mustapha impressed with his ball control and created multiple chances throughout the 90 minutes.
Chapman captained the side on his 21st birthday, making his first appearance since early April. Caldwell made three substitutions at half-time to continue assessing his options ahead of the 2026/27 season opener at Barnsley.
Latics had a late goal disallowed for offside when Seb Spelman's header was diverted in by Cole Simms.
Wigan now turn to their trip to Grimsby Town for their final pre-season fixture on Saturday. It will be their first visit to the club since 2004.
