Wigan Warriors secured victory over Hull KR in Round 25, with manager Matt Peet reflecting positively on the performance in challenging conditions.
Peet highlighted the team's ability to execute their game plan effectively despite the weather. "I'm very happy," he said. "I liked the performance in difficult conditions. I thought we got the basics of our game right for most of it, first half definitely, second half there was a period but we came through that."
Execution and Discipline
The manager credited the squad's skill level and decision-making. "Our skill on the whole considering the conditions was really good. We played good high percentage rugby and there were some exciting moments as well - I was proud of the balance in the game," Peet said.
He noted that wet weather can lead to repeated handling errors. "Sometimes you watch games in those conditions and it's knock on after knock on. I thought our execution for large parts was good, discipline was good, we kicked well and scored some nice tries."
Jai Field's Performance
Peet praised halfback Jai Field's development. "Jai Field was very good. He has developed his game, he's showing other ways of getting himself in the game, not just on the attacking shape, but he's turning up around the ruck when there's not going to be width in our play and injecting himself in the game," Peet said.
Field also provided quality service to teammates, notably Jake Wardle. Peet commended "the ball he gives to Jake Wardle is high quality" and highlighted "some courageous efforts" from the player.
The Occasion
Peet acknowledged the significance of the match for younger squad members. "For the younger lads, it would have been a unique experience. It had the kind of build up of a final because there's an atmosphere, energy and expectation in the warm up and I thought they dealt with it really well," he said.
The manager noted the wider support the club received. "It's understanding that the game meant a lot to people and that we had a responsibility. Hopefully our players got that and thought they delivered moments the fans could take home and enjoy."
Peet commended the respect shown across Super League and credited Kris Radlinski for organising the event appropriately. "The game does a great job in remembering those that have come before us. It's important to mention how respectful other Clubs have been, including Hull KR, and messages from across Super League which is indicative of the respectability," he said.
Team Focus
Looking ahead, Peet expressed satisfaction with the team's consistency and connection. "It's not always been the case where we've had this level of consistency. It's tapping into that and trying to get it to last as long as we can. The team seem really focussed and they understand what makes us a tough team to play against."
