A 56-year-old man has died following an assault in Ince, Wigan. Brian Cunliffe was attacked on Bryn Street at around 22:35 on Friday. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.
Officers were called to the scene after ambulance services reported an "ongoing disturbance" in which a man "had blood coming from his face". A man in his 50s and a man in his 30s have been arrested as inquiries continue.
Initial Refusal of Medical Care
When police attended, Cunliffe initially refused medical care. He told officers he did not remember how he got his injuries and said he would take himself to hospital in the morning.
Police were later alerted by Salford Royal Hospital that Cunliffe was in a life-threatening condition at around 12:00 on Saturday. He died on Sunday.
Investigation Ongoing
Greater Manchester Police said the arrested men and the victim are believed to be known to each other. Detective Inspector Hulston said: "I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time. We are continuing to establish the full facts of this incident, but we believe both suspects and the victim were known to each other."
The victim's family are being supported and fully updated throughout the investigation.
