Jonny Smith has completed a permanent transfer to Rochdale, ending his three-year spell at Wigan Athletic. The winger leaves the Club after making 77 appearances in all competitions, scoring 10 goals and providing nine assists.
Smith joined Wigan from Burton Albion in the summer of 2023. He made an immediate impact in his debut season, helping the Club achieve Sky Bet League One survival despite the team beginning the campaign on minus eight points. He scored four goals in 34 appearances across all competitions during 2023/24.
Goal of the Season and Cup Glory
Smith's most memorable moment came with a curling effort away at Barnsley that rescued a late point at Oakwell. The goal was voted Goal of the Season by supporters at the Club's 2023/24 End of Season Awards Dinner.
In the 2024/25 campaign, injury disrupted the 28-year-old's progress, with Smith missing the opening two months. On his return, he became an important figure during the winter months and earned a new contract. He marked the occasion with a stunning goal against Fulham in the Emirates FA Cup at the Brick Community Stadium.
Loan Spell and Move to Rochdale
Smith later joined Gillingham on loan, where he enjoyed a successful spell before suffering a lower leg injury that ruled him out for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign. Following surgery and rehabilitation, he has now completed his permanent move to Rochdale.
