Leigh Miners American Football Club says a long-running sponsorship from Hickory’s Standish has helped it buy new playing kit, helmets and other equipment.

The volunteer-run club has been supported by the Almond Brook Road restaurant for several seasons. Players and coaches also use the venue to meet after training and matches.

Andy Costello, general manager of Leigh Miners, said the backing had changed the programme’s outlook and paid for equipment the club would otherwise have struggled to obtain.

Hickory’s says its support for the Miners forms part of a wider programme involving grassroots American football teams around the country.

Mark Hansen, general manager of Hickory’s Standish, said the partnership was intended to support the players, coaches and volunteers helping the sport grow locally.

More than 150 clubs affiliated with the British American Football Association field teams across the UK, many of them supported by volunteers.
