Wigan Athletic have confirmed that 18-year-old forward Harrison Bettoni has joined Premier League side Chelsea. The two clubs have agreed a compensation fee for the young player's departure ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Academy Graduate's Senior Impact
Bettoni came through the Kingdom Wigan Athletic Academy and made his senior debut for Latics at AFC Wimbledon, where he scored a match-winning double including a free-kick on his first touch. During the 2025/26 season, he scored three goals in 27 senior appearances and won the Westwood Motor Group Goal of the Season award as voted by supporters.
Away from the first team, Bettoni captained the Academy's U16s to the Professional Development League Cup — a first in the club's history.
Club's Retention Effort
Despite being offered multiple long-term contracts by Wigan Athletic, Bettoni opted to pursue his career at Chelsea. Managing Director Sarah Guilfoyle said the club had made "every possible effort" to retain him and worked closely with Chelsea to agree a compensation package that reflects the academy's investment in his development.
