Residents across Wigan Borough can arrange a free home-safety check through a new initiative involving Age UK Wigan Borough and local business PROCare.
Step Ahead Wigan offers a practical visit to identify potential risks in the home and discuss everyday safety, support and possible adaptations.
The initiative launched on 27 October, World Occupational Therapy Day, and is intended to help residents consider their options before difficulties around the home become more serious.
What is free?
The Home Safety Check and initial advice are free. Equipment, products or installation work recommended afterwards may involve a charge, with costs depending on what is needed.
The organisers say some residents may qualify for minor adaptations or financial assistance through existing council services, subject to assessment and eligibility.
The check is a practical review of everyday home safety, rather than a formal occupational therapy assessment. People needing specialist assessment can be directed to the appropriate council service.
David Germain, chief executive of Age UK Wigan Borough, said: “Through Step Ahead Wigan, we’re working with PROCare to help residents identify potential risks and understand their options.”
