A researcher in the Netherlands is appealing to Wigan residents for a photograph and family memories of a soldier he is researching.
Björn Groenen, from Helmond, is looking for information about Robert James Thompson, whom he identifies as a Wigan soldier buried at Mierlo War Cemetery.
In an appeal sent to the newsroom, Björn says he has adopted Thompson’s grave and wants to learn more about the person behind the name.
Search for a family photograph
Björn says he has lived in Helmond all his life and has long been familiar with the nearby cemetery.
His research focuses on Thompson’s life, military service and family connections. He hopes a reader may have a portrait, an old family photograph or information that could help him develop a fuller account.
He would like to hear from relatives, descendants or anyone with knowledge of the family’s connections to Wigan.
“Even the smallest piece of information could be valuable,” he wrote.
How to help
Anyone who wishes to help with the search can contact Björn directly at b.groenen@student.fontys.nl.
The appeal is for family memories and photographs; no portrait of Thompson was supplied with the request.
